The Mind Game of Trust: Holding On When Everything Feels Uncertain

When the world around you feels shaky—when the headlines talk about government shutdowns, layoffs, and uncertainty—it’s easy for your thoughts to spiral. You start wondering, How am I going to make it? What if things don’t get better? Can I really trust God to provide?
In moments like these, trust becomes more than just a word—it becomes a battle in the mind.
In Genesis 22:1–10, Abraham faces one of the greatest tests of trust in history. God asks him to offer up his son, Isaac—the very promise he waited years to receive. It didn’t make sense. It was unthinkable. Yet Abraham obeyed. Why? Because he trusted the character of God, even when the command seemed confusing.
Pastor Brandon Hill, in his message “The Mind Game of Trust,” reminds us that trusting God isn’t about understanding why—it’s about believing Who is in control. True trust requires surrender, obedience, and confidence that God always provides.
If you’re feeling the pressure of uncertainty right now, here are four powerful truths you can hold on to as you navigate this “mind game of trust.”
1. Trust God’s character when you can’t see His plan.
Abraham didn’t know how the story would end—but he knew the One who wrote it.When your situation feels unpredictable—when paychecks are delayed, bills are due, or job security feels unstable—remember this truth: God is not caught off guard. His faithfulness doesn’t depend on the government or the economy.
Scripture says, “God is not a man that He should lie” (Numbers 23:19). That means His promises are still true—no matter what’s happening around you. Trust isn’t about clarity; it’s about confidence in His character.
2. Obey before you overthink.
Abraham didn’t wait to act—he simply obeyed. He rose early, gathered what he needed, and took Isaac up the mountain. Sometimes the hardest part of trust is moving when you don’t have all the answers.
You may not know how God will provide, but take the next step of obedience anyway. Maybe it’s applying for that new opportunity, sowing generosity even when it feels tight, or choosing peace instead of panic. As Pastor Brandon said, “God’s provision appears when we trust and obey.”
Your act of obedience opens the door for God’s divine provision.
3. Release what you’ve been holding too tightly.
Trust requires surrender. Abraham had to lay his promise—his son—on the altar. What’s on your altar today? Maybe it’s your finances, your plans, your timeline, or your sense of control.
When you release what’s most precious to you, you’re not losing it—you’re placing it into the hands of the One who can sustain it. God didn’t take Isaac; He provided a ram in his place. That’s what trust looks like—believing that God always provides another way.
Even in a shutdown, He is still Jehovah Jireh—the Lord who provides.
4. Worship while you wait for the outcome.
Before Abraham saw the ram, he called that mountain “The Lord will provide.” He worshiped before the outcome. That’s what real trust does—it praises in advance.
If you’re in a season of waiting or worry, let worship anchor your heart. Lift your eyes off the news and onto the One who never changes. As you do, your perspective shifts from fear to faith, from uncertainty to unshakable trust.
When everything around you feels out of your control, remember this: Trust is not a feeling—it’s a choice.
Even when your mind wants to play games with your faith, remind yourself of this truth—God’s provision is not delayed; it’s being prepared. The same God who met Abraham on Mount Moriah will meet you right where you are.
