Fear is one of the greatest challenges we face in life. It creeps in when we’re unsure about the future, worried about finances, or anxious about our health and relationships. And yet, Scripture reminds us over and over again that fear is not the final word—faith is.
In Matthew 14:22–33, Peter steps out of the boat to walk on water toward Jesus. For a moment, his faith lifts him above the storm. But as soon as he focuses on the wind and the waves, fear drags him down. Jesus reaches out and saves him, saying, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
This story teaches us that fear grows when we focus on the storm, but faith rises when we focus on the Savior. Here are practical ways to live with faith over fear in uncertain times:
1. Fix your eyes on Jesus, not the storm.
Peter walked on water as long as his eyes were on Jesus. In moments of fear, shift your attention from what scares you to Who saves you. Reading the Gospels daily is one way to keep your focus on the One who is greater than your storms.
2. Replace fearful thoughts with God’s promises.
Fear often begins in our thoughts. Replace those thoughts with the promises of Scripture. Try memorizing 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Speaking truth over your fear disarms its power.
3. Take one courageous step at a time.
Faith doesn’t mean the absence of fear—it means moving forward despite fear. Peter had to take that first step out of the boat. What step is God calling you to take today? It might be starting the conversation, submitting the application, or reaching out for help.
4. Invite God into your fears through prayer.
Philippians 4:6–7 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Prayer shifts the weight of your fears from your shoulders to God’s capable hands.
5. Stay in community for encouragement.
Fear isolates, but faith thrives in community. The disciples were in the boat together during the storm. You’re not meant to walk through fear alone. Surround yourself with a church family that will pray with you and lift you up when you feel weak.
Fear may come knocking, but faith is the key that opens the door to peace. Courage doesn’t come from ignoring the storm, but from trusting the God who controls it.
